Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk unveils the Tesla Model X all-electric vehicle at the Tesla Design Studio in Hawthorne, Calif., Thursday. The Model X, which is built on a slightly elongated version of the Model S platform, has a full third row. Musk demonstrated that it could be accessed without folding down the middle-row seats. Instead, the middle row slid forward. the Model X has its lithium ion battery pack in the base of the car. Tesla will likely offer the same battery configuration options that it does for the Model S, although the Model X should get 10 percent to 12 percent less range due to its increased weight. The key to Tesla’s cool design is the powertrain, built around a flat battery pack that extends from the front to rear wheels under the car. Musk says he does not expect the Model X prototype to change much in its looks when it reaches production. Most changes would be done to improve aerodynamics. The car keeps many of the design elements of the Model S, although with a higher roofline. Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen says he tried to design the car to not look too masculine or too feminine.
This provides a low center of gravity for good handling, but also allows for substantially more interior space than a vehicle with a transmission running under it. In demonstrations with journalists this week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stood up inside the car to show the ample available space, a feature that makes loading or entering and exiting easier. The Model X has three rows of seats and is able to hold seven adults and their luggage, something other SUVs makers could not claim. The electric powertrain under the Model S and now the Model X are a platform on which Tesla intends to build other variants. During the unveiling of the Model X last night in Los Angeles, Musk reiterated his desire to make a “mass market” electric vehicle with a lower price point. As Tesla is phasing out sales of the Roadster, the company’s financial success hinges largely on sales of Model S and the Model X. The Model S is still expected to come out later this year with higher volume shipments next year. It’s not a surprise to see carmakers expanding the roster of all-electric offerings beyond coupes and sedans. That’s to be expected as the market for green vehicles continues to mature.
